REVIEW:
Pros
Works as a scanner, printer, and color copier. Prints directly from memory cards and cameras. Quality for graphics and photos ranges from good to very good.
Cons
Text quality is only fair. No ADF. No built-in fax capability.
Bottom Line
The HP PSC 1610 All-in-One is a scanner, printer, and standalone copier that can print photos from memory cards and PictBridge cameras. It lacks an ADF and built-in fax, but offers reasonable performance and good to very good graphics and photo quality, along with fair text quality.
The HP PSC 1610 All-in-One ($129.99 direct) is the second inexpensive AIO we've seen recently that can print at reasonable speeds with acceptable quality (the $100 Canon Pixma MP130 is the other). Like the MP130, the HP 1610 lacks an ADF (automatic document feeder) and built-in fax features, but it will let you scan to a fax program to use your computer's fax modem. It also scans, copies, and prints--and it prints from PictBridge cameras as well as memory cards, a capability the Canon entry lacks.
Physical setup, including automatic alignment, is standard for an AIO that connects via USB, a nicety that the Canon MP130 doesn't offer. The printer ships with black and tricolor cartridges for four-color printing, but you can swap the black cartridge for a photo cartridge with light cyan, light magenta, and black, for six-color printing. We used four colors for our text and graphics tests, and six colors for photos.
On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software, www.qualitylogic.com), the HP 1610 handed in a respectable total of 23 minutes 10 seconds. Only the Dell Photo All-In-One Printer 942 was faster, at 20:54, among ink-jet AIOs that cost $175 or less. For photos, the HP 1610 is a bit slower than other AIOs: We timed it at an average 2:55 for each 4-by-6, compared with 2:34 for the Canon MP130 and 2:10 for the Dell printer. For 8-by-10s, the HP model averaged 7:14, compared with 5:58 for the Canon and 4:56 for the Dell.
Output quality is easily good enough for most purposes, though a bit uneven. Text is below par for a modern ink-jet-based AIO, with a rating at the high end of fair, but the majority of test fonts are easily readable at 5 points or smaller. The relatively low text rating stems from one highly stylized font that was a problem even at 12 points, with poorly formed characters. Graphics were at the high end of good, with a tendency to lose thin lines, but no serious problems surfaced. Photo quality was very good, held back only by a hint of posterization in two test photos.
All told, the mix of speed and quality makes the HP 1610 a good value, as long as you don't need an ADF or a standalone fax.

U.S.A. Shipping
Transaction is most feasible through local pick-up in the Metro Detroit area. However, you very well may not live near the Detroit area for a local pick-up to be accomplished. Thus, I wish to offer a shipping option via postal carrier.
I have determined that the cost to shipping in the continental U.S. will range anywhere between $18.50-$40 based on the weight and dimensions of the printer. I have entered a flat-rate shipping option for each U.S. Zone (USPS Zones 1-8) based on the information I have researched. If you are interested in buying this item and would like a better estimate, please provide me the state of your shipping info so I can provide you an exact quote.
